Bowflex Dumbbells Models
Which One Is For You?
The dumbbells Bowflex makes are quick and easy to use and best of all they take up just a tiny bit of space compared to the amount of space that traditional dumbbells take.
To quickly adjust these dumbbells, bowflex has designed them so that all you have to do is turn the dials to the amount of weight you want and then simply lift up or pick up the dumbbell. When you’re done with that exercise it’s easy to put the weight back in it’s place and quickly adjust the dial and pick them up for another set.
The 2009 models eliminated many of the complaints of the 2008 models by replacing the plastic parts with Metal parts making them more durable . Unlike traditional weights, it is not recommended that you drop these more than about six inches after an exhausting set of dumbbell exercises.
If you intend to use these weights for quick sets, circuit training or a program such as P90X where you need to change weights quickly then these dumbbells bowflex makes come highly recommended. Owners of these weights recommend them because of their speed and ease of use they rapidly transition from one dumbell exercise to another.

Are They Worth The Money?
Although at first glance these dumbbells may seem expensive they are still cheaper than buying each weight separately. In addition they take up a lot less space and they look great too.
Warranty
The dumbbells bowflex makes are backed by a five year warranty on weight plates and a two year warranty on parts.
Which Set Is For You?
There are two models to choose from the Bowflex 1090 dumbbells and the Bowflex 552 dumbbells. In both sets the weights are covered with durable moulding that gets rid of clanging metal plate sound and makes your workouts quieter.
The bowflex 552 model has a few differences from the bowflex 1090 dumbbells model. The biggest differences are that the bowflex 552 has a round, rubberized handle and goes from 5 pounds to 52.5 pounds and can go up in increments of 2.5 pounds. The Bowflex 1090 dumbbells go from 10 to 90 pounds in 5 pound increments and has a triangular handle without a rubberized handle. For more specific details on each model keep reading.
The Bowflex 552 Dumbbells
The bowflex 552 dumbbells go from 5 pounds to 52.5 pounds and adjust in 2.5 pound increments up to the first 25 pounds. They have a round handle that is rubberized and comfortable. They combine over 30 weights into one using a unique dial system. This is the set used most by 95% of people who wants a great workout and who want to maintain and increase strength. 52.5 pounds for each arm is plenty for most people. However if you are exceptionally strong or you are close to the 50 pound max of these right now then you could quickly outgrow these and you may want to choose the bowflex 1090 model. Both these models eliminate the need for having weights scattered around your workout space and increases the speed of your workouts for maximum results in your training.
The Bowflex 1090 Dumbbells
The bowflex 1090 dumbbells are for those who are exceptionally strong and who want to build more muscle. These ‘bells go from 10 pounds all the way up to 90 pounds in increments of 5 pounds. They have a triangular handle which is not covered by rubber- the triangular shape of the handle is helpful when lifting heavier weights but the handle without rubber is viewed by many as a minor negative but it can be easily fixed by wearing gloves or you can cover the handle with thick tape.
This set combines over 17 sets or 34 weights into one using a unique dial system. You can continually challenge and improve your whole body, you can do your heavier exercises like lunges as well as lighter exercises such as curls and raises.
The Good About The Dumbbells Bowflex Models
They are quick and easy to use so you’ll actually want to use them and workout. It takes only a few seconds to choose the weight you would like and all you do is pick them up and you’re all set and ready to go for your next set.
They fit easily in a small area of only a few feet like a corner or a closet which eliminates the need to have weights scattered all over your workout space.
Cost less than buying each weight individually.
The weights are covered by durable moulding so there is no more clanging, noisy or loud banging noises when you workout. So you can work out in the middle of the night if you want and you won’t bother anyone.
If you have children then you can set the weights on their heaviest setting so that they will not be able to lift them up and hurt themselves.
They can be portable- some people take them to the office during the week and home on weekends. There are personal trainers who travel to clients homes who report that they enjoy taking these with them so they can train with their clients.
They are well designed and look impressive.
They are quick and easy to use and only take a few seconds to select the weight you want, then and all you gotta do is pick them up and start curling or raising or lunging when you’re done just set them back down in the base.
Both models come with a good dvd, “Secrets Of The 4 Step Rep.”, that has over 30 exercises and 80 variations that users have reported has been very helpful.
Cheaper than most gym memberships and by the time you drove there worked out and drove home you would have been done using these at home plus you didn’t have to wait in line or wipe off the sweat from someone else before using the equipment.
A great investment and addition to any home gym.
Other equipment available to help in your training is the ergonomically designed Bowflex stand which is a lower back saver and makes heavy lifting easier and safer it is nice to have but not a necessity. It’s also on wheels so you can wheel it out of the way when you’re done. Also available is the Bowflex bench there are two different models to choose from and differ by the number of incline and decline settings.
The Bad
The other thing that some people said was a minor negative was that for some of the exercises the length of the dumbbell was a little bit too long and so they had to adjust those exercises in order to work around this issue. For example in doing concentration curls some people report having no problem while others said they had to adjust this exercise by doing one arm at a time.
Overall customers felt that this was not really a very big issue compared to all you gain from owning bowflex dumbells and that they would buy these dumbbells again.
To Sum It All Up
Overall both of these sets of dumbbells bowflex has made come highly recommended by it’s users and are a great investment and will last for years if taken care of. They are also backed by a good warranty which is what reputable companies do.

Few compromises and lots of benefits
Comments about Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells:
These are fantastic space savers! These are easy to use and when used with the rolling stand they are easy to use and then return to storage without doing any bending over… The build quality is very good but they are more fragile then a cast iron dumbbell. Use with care and these can last a lifetime.
I would buy again.

Easy and Convenient
Comments about Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells:
Pros: Easily change the weight to the pounds you want with a quick turn of the dial. Convenient to use… Cons: The barbells can be a bit awkward at times because they are so long. Every now and then the weights don’t click into place and the barbell doesn’t pick up the appropriate weights properly.

Excellent product!
Comments about Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells:
This item is great for an all in one workout. I was worried about the size of it all but its great. Combined with the 5.1 bench I get a great upper body and chest work out. The only flaws were the grips/handles its hard to hold especially if your sweating but easily resolved with some grips/gloves. …

Exceeded all expectations!
about Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Dumbbells:
I purchased the adjustable weight set and bench for use in a 2 bedroom apartment. The adjustable weights replace all dumbbells I would use in a gym, they adjust smoothly and easily, they take up very little space, and are cheaper than buying a complete set.
These are ideal for the beginner to the advanced lifter, and as you get stronger you only need to dial-up more weight! Coupled with the bench you have all the equipment for a total body workout…takes up just a corner of a room.

These dumb bells, combined with a chin up bar, are all you need for a complete workout. I have been using these for about 2 months now with the P90X training videos, and have never been in better shape.
